ADAR BET MORE THAN HUMAN WORLD

WINTER INTO SPRING.  FIRST BLOOMS

Spring has started to begin.  The crocuses are blooming, some of the daffodils are open and others are primed.  There’s wild onion standing up over the grass, some of which is starting to turn green.  The redbud trees are starting to bloom and when I walk in the woods I catch occasional hints of the sweetness that I think is the wild witch hazel blooming.  The skunk cabbage has started to grow in the wet spots and the bullfrogs are singing their songs.

When I raised cows, this was a time of the year that they were restless.  They wanted to go out hunting for the new grass.  The dry hay that they had been grateful for a mere few weeks earlier was now greeted with complaints.  Jared, they seemed to say, let us out already. Not long from now most of the grass will be green (what we call green up) and a little bit after that it will reach the magic 4 inches at which I used to turn them out. I first learned to wait until the fescue was at least 6 inches, but that was a mistake, because there was no way we could keep up with the growth when we waited that long.

The birds are starting to sing, looking for mates or just expressing the joy of warmer weather and worms that had been refrigerated instead of frozen or dried berries or seeds.  I wonder when their diet changes?  Some days still feel really cold and I bundle up when I sit outside.  And it is supposed to get into the 60’s this week.  Last week I took a walk and when I sat down on a bench in the sun, I turned my face and soaked in the heat. On the other hand, I built a fire last night and let the heat seep into my body. It is a time of transition.
